Child Safety

At Modernised we are very passionate about Child Safety and fully support the “Make it Safe” campaign.

Buyers and users of blinds and window furnishings should be aware of the hazard that can be posed by unrestrained cords, braids, loop chains and wires which may be hazardous to young children. Looped cords of all sorts are a strangulation hazard and should be kept out of reach of children.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) recommends that "pull cords on curtains and blinds should be kept short and kept out of reach of children".

The CEN (European Committee for Standardisation) Official Standard is as follows: “Complete elimination of the strangulation risk can only be achieved by keeping cords, chains, and tapes and similar out of the reach of children. Use of additional safety devices may reduce the risk of strangulation but cannot be considered foolproof. Motorisation eliminates the risk associated with looped and pull-cord operating mechanisms but the risk relating to inner tapes and cords (for relevant products) remains. Persons in charge of children are ultimately responsible for following the safety instructions provided by the manufacturer”.

The following are recommended:

  • Ensure that cord / chain lengths are appropriate to the circumstances.
  • Have cords adjusted to keep them out of reach of children.
  • Use one of the many proprietary cleats, cord tidies , clips or tie-downs that are available.
  • Use an alternative blind operating system that is inherently child safe; that is one that does not have the cords or chains that can cause a potential hazard.
  • DO NOT place your child’s cot, bed, highchair or playpen near to a window blind.
  • DO NOT put sofas, chairs tables, shelves or bookcases near to a window blind as children love to climb.
